Volunteer

Thank you so much for considering volunteering with Hanover Habitat! We build and sell homes to qualified partner families in partnership with the community. This means all of our homeowners have mortgage payments.  As most of our partner families are first time homeowners, they are also required to attend homeowner education classes prior to moving into their home, to help them become successful homeowners.  Our partner families also perform a minimum of 200 hours of sweat equity on their home and those of other partner families.  Sweat equity gives the homeowner the opportunity to invest physically and emotionally in the mission of Habitat, while learning real, hands on skills necessary for successful homeownership.

We build all of our homes with volunteer labor in partnership with community businesses, individuals and social organizations.  Because of our volunteers we are able to sell our homes at cost through a no profit mortgage, rather than charging the homeowner for labor costs.  This helps make affordable housing a reality for our hardworking but struggling families, particularly in these economic times.

 Adult Waiver

Youth Waiver

All volunteers must sign a waiver prior to volunteering with Hanover Habitat.
*All youths under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

Group Opportunities

Corporate & Committee Events Sponsor groups (groups that raise the money to build the homes) always have the right of first refusal for volunteer days on the jobsite, but rarely schedule volunteers every work day. This allows us to provide hands-on team building opportunities with you and your group on some construction tasks. Just call or email us to discuss sponsorship options.  There is also a Home Sponsorship Packet available for review by clicking here.

Individual Opportunities

Family Advocates

If you're interested in mentoring a Partner Family as they work towards home-ownership, then consider becoming a Family Advocate! Advocates build a relationship with the family, and while generally requiring just a couple hours a month, this volunteer position is one of the most important aspects of the success of the Partner Families. Construction Volunteers

One of our most common volunteer activities is to work at the construction site! We build all of our homes with volunteer labor under the supervision of Garrett, our construction superivsor.  We don't require any previous skill or experience!  We provide all training and tools necessary.  We typically build every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 8:30-3:30.  Please see our construction calendar below to view available days!

Recycling Crew

Affectionately known as "The Junk Guys", Habitat has a crew of 3 retired enthusiasts who earn close to $20,000 for Habitat each year by keeping recyclables out of the landfill!  Check out our article here about opportunities to volunteer with our Recycling Crew.  Volunteer days are usually Tuesdays or Wednesdays, from about 9AM-3PM.

The ReStore

Our ReStore needs volunteers to help with customer service and processing donations. The Store sells new and used building materials donated by the local community. Proceeds go towards the construction of Habitat homes in Hanover County. We especially need volunteers who can regularly lift heavy merchandise. Many vacancies! 2-4 hour commitment on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis in a fun, laid-back work environment. Interested?
